Basic Human Needs: Education
As an InspiraSonho Ambassador, Carolina (Carol) visited public schools in Brazil to speak to students about their opportunities and encourage them to pursue their dreams. When she visited a school in Engenheiro Coelho, Carol was surprised to learn that none of the students understood basic English words. Recognizing the advantage of English proficiency in the pursuit of academic and professional success, Carol began leading a free English course in her community in São Paulo. In March 2019, Carol and three friends founded Globalizando – an online platform to educate Brazilian youth on a range of languages and cultures, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. They aim to prepare students to achieve success in today’s global world and to democratize students’ access to educational and professional opportunities. In its pilot semester, Globalizando trained 65 students from all areas of Brazil in English, French, Korean, German and Spanish languages. In 2020, Globalizando plans to develop an official curriculum, which will allow them to scale their impact and reach many more students in Brazil and beyond. Ultimately, Carol hopes to create a Globalizando Model United Nations program, offer a wider range of language programs and officially integrate Globalizando into all Brazilian schools and communities.
